CAN

Este expresa habilidad, posibilidad y permiso

-         I can’t speak French. (habilidad)

-          He can get the tickets with a 50% off discount. (posibilidad)

-          Can I talk to you? (permiso).

COULD

Este se utiliza para hablar de habilidades en el pasado, cosas que no podíamos realizar en el pasado, solicitudes, etc.

-          I could speak Italian when I was in elementary school. (habilidad en el pasado)

-          I couldn’t leave the house after 10pm when I lived with my parents. (imposibilidad en el pasado)

-          Could you send me the copy by noon? (solicitud)

MAY y MIGHT

“May” y “might” normalmente tienen la misma intensidad, sin embargo, “might” es usado con un toque de menos posibilidad de que algo suceda. Algunos de sus usos son: dar y pedir permiso, expresar deseos, especular acerca de acciones pasadas, etc.

-          He might notice it. (posibilidad)

-          She may not have another slice of pizza. (permiso)

-          May I come in? (permiso)

-          May the Lord help us. (deseo)

MUST, HAVE TO y MUSN’T

La diferencia entre “MUST” y “HAVE TO” es que “must” se ocupa para expresar obligación impuesta por parte de quien habla y “have to” expresa obligación personal hacia algo externo. Los usos más comunes de “must” y “have to” son: obligación, deducción, énfasis en necesidad, fuerte recomendación, mientras que “musn’t” expresa prohibición.

-          You must show your passport. (obligación)

-          She must have paid in advance. (deducción)

-          You must go to that disco. (recomendación fuerte)

-          You musn’t use your phone while driving.(prohibición)

SHOULD

“Should” es usado para dar consejos, hablar de situaciones posibles en el tiempo presente y en el futuro. Este puede ser reemplazado por “ought to” sin tener un cambio en el significado.

-          Mom, you should check your email. (consejo)

-          Lorena should be in the office now. (situación posible en el presente)

-          You guys should get the job; your presentation was the best. (situación posible en el futuro)
